Amazon.com Product Description
Everyone loves music. Whether making up lyrics to a favorite tune, drumming the steering wheel while driving, or playing air guitar along with the video, you know you love music. But the Blue Man Group wants you to take that love one step further: they want you to create music. And this set of percussion tubes inspired by their live stage show is just the device you need to get started. This compact box (just shy of two feet by one foot) consists of eight PVC tubes that emit an invisible beam. By simply waving the included sticks, or even your hands, above the tubes, you break that beam and create a unique sound. Now imagine the variety of amazing tunes that you can make by breaking the beams at different intervals, from various distances, at changing speeds, and so on. The eight tubes reflect the sounds of the cymbal, snare, electric snare, conga, ride cymbal, hi-hat, hi-timbale, and bass drum.
While that might sound like enough to keep you occupied, the musical versatility doesn’t stop there. This magical kit provides even more interactive ways to make music with 10 pre-programmed songs, a speed drum setting that adjusts tempo, plus five instrument sounds to choose from: Blue Man tubes, drums, steel drums, xylophone, and marimba. You can also insert your iPod or other MP3 player into the loading dock to mix, fade, layer, or just play along with your favorite songs.
High-quality, built-in speakers and volume control let others hear your musical wanderings straight from the tubes, or you can use the audio out jack and run the system through your stereo or TV. If the hour is late or baby is sleeping, you can plug the included earphones into the headphone jack and entertain yourself without disturbing those around you. There’s even a way to record your jam sessions and then play them back and a spot to plug in a microphone (not included) should you want to explore your vocal talents, too. When the concert is over, a storage tube keeps the wave sticks ready for the next time. Four AA batteries are required, but not included.

Great Concept and works great, January 7, 2007

This keyboard is amazing. I bought it for my daughter and it can do all kinds of things. I agree the packaging to open is tough but what product is not these days. It is so fun kids can pretend they are in a orchestra or even add melodies and instruments to songs through the MP3 player feature. Sure it does not teach anyone how to use a keyboard but it never advertised that it can. Each tube does something different when you wave your hand in front of it (drums, change melodies, etc. Way more fun than an average keyboard and can also double as a mp3 speaker.

LOVE IT! Got for XMAS for myself and my grandson to play with. He loves it too! Great value! Lots of features and flexibility for the price. Minor complaints: 1) Should include AC power adapter. 2) My older (3rd generation) iPod is too thick to fit in the MP3 player tray. 3) Should include cable to play through external amp and/or speakers.

A Kid's ReviewI recently got one of these blue man group drum sets....and let me tell you, it was worth saving for! It is the most fun toy I have ever had, and I use It all the time! I got it, and my first reaction was,"SWEET!!!" If you get the blue man group precussion instrument, I'm sure you'll say the same!

My son is 7 and this was his favorite Christmas gift. He even brought it in the car with him to play on a road trip. He hooks up his ipod, puts on his headphones and plays along with his favorite songs. He's even learned the drum rhythms for a couple of songs. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Great toy! He prefers it to the expensive Yamaha keyboard he received.

This is the only thing my daughter really keyed in on for Christmas 06. She never wavered, so I ordered it as her big gift from Santa. My husband thought it would be a bust and she wouldn't play with it. She has not stopped playing with it, making her own beats, "writing" her own songs with beats and lyrics. She took it to school today to show for "favorite gift" show and tell. She is six, soon to be 7. She immediately said, "maybe she could get the keyboard for next Christmas" and when I reminded her that her birtday was coming much sooner and maybe she could get it then, she was thrilled. She also wants a microphone to plug into it as well. She seems to be loving it.

tubes are a blast. You can play them while you listen to your favorite tunes or just groove on your own! I bought these for my 9-year-old daughter and she loves them. She has to be in the mood to play with them but when she does, it's a blast. They're just plain fun! I would imagine they're awesome for the serious musician.
