Here is one handheld gaming system that both parents and kids will be able to agree upon. The Leapster Learning Game System takes the brain-building principles that Leapfrog laid out in its early electronic learning devices (which have an interactive book format) and applies them to a video-game format. Leapster draws kids in with familiar video game templates—all of which have a secret weapon: a built-in learning component. LeapFrog hopes that kids will become so engaged in the gaming aspects and familiar television and movie characters offered by this toy that they won’t even notice they’re learning and reinforcing valuable reading, math, and language skills.

Aimed at kids ages 4 to 10 years, the 6-by-4-inch Leapster is sized for little hands and comfortably shaped with safe, rounded edges. The 2.25-inch touch screen is ample for most of the gaming activities; although a little cluttered when used for the art and drawing modules. Buttons are suitably placed on either side of the unit for thumb-operated control. The right side features "A" and "B" buttons for selecting settings and answers, while the left has a multi-directional gamepad for game play. A stylus is also attached for drawing, selecting tools and settings, and dragging and placing objects. The 3-inch backlit display makes games visible in the dark (although parents will prefer that the Leapster is shut off at bedtime) and the animated graphics, while not completely state-of-the-art, are well done and suitable for this age range.

As with the manufacturer’s LeapPad products, the Leapster does require the purchase of additional cartridges to expand its capabilities. Kids can choose from a star-studded list of their favorite characters to play educational games with, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Thomas the Tank Engine, Dora the Explorer, Nemo, Cinderella, Batman, and more. Leapfrog’s own cartoon star, Tad, narrates a few as well. While stocking up on the extra software titles can get expensive, it gives parents some control and input on which characters they’d like their kids to learn from. Plus, characters for these titles are appropriately matched to the maturity of the targeted grade level (pre-K through 4th grade).

Starting up or hitting the Home button takes players to the main menu. There is one pre-loaded game that children will likely come back to again and again. Rabbit River is based on the Frogger game format but with an additional learning element. In letters mode, kids guide their bunny to hop floating logs to the other side of the river while jumping on specific letters to identify them or spell out a requested 3- or 4-letter word. In numbers mode, the bunny must land on specific numbers on the logs to skip count by twos or form a correct equation. Another pre-loaded activity is Color Corral, an interactive coloring book designed to boost creative problem-solving skills. This module is like a kid’s version of Photoshop and offers a variety of scenic templates, colors, tools, and moving icons that kids can combine for an infinite number of possibilities. The included manual gives suggestions on how to reinforce these math, reading, and art concepts in the real world.

Each game offers multiple skill levels so kids can ease into new territory at the beginner level, then challenge themselves with more advanced learning problems as they understand the concept. If kids are stumped at any point during a game, they can hit the Hint button and receive a friendly push in the right direction from an animated tutor, Edison the firefly. Edison also appears automatically if kids answer a question incorrectly several times in a row and coaches the child to reach the correct answer. Sure, Mindstorms NXT is a toy, but it is an important toy, like a piano or a chemistry set. It's one of those items that engages an imagination and possibly opens doors to new interests. Since our future is surely to be shared with robots--it's already started happening, just look at Roomba--those robots will need, at least initially, humans to program and maintain them. Those people, years from now, will likely remember their experiences with Lego Mindstorms.

The main part of the kit is the NXT itself. It's about the size of an iPod (though a bit thicker) with a a loudspeaker, a monochrome LCD, and navigation keys on the front. This is the controller for the robot--it's brain, if you will. It has three ports on top for connecting to the servo motors and four ports on the bottom for connecting to four different sensors: Touch, Light, Sound, and Ultrasonic (see detail below).

All my family uses them on their portable devices to prevent theft. We also use them on backpacks and school bags. What an inexpensive way to protect the laptop!!!! Wow, this device has saved us more than once with my kids at college. The motion alarm is excellent and I have added security knowing it also functions as a personal alarm if I or the kids need it! Great Product, Excellent Price!!!!

Flash drive works well and is recognized without loading any drivers in Windows XP. Knife, nailfile/screwdriver,scissors are a plus to have. Small and very portable. Only complaint would be I think the price is a little steep.

I got a pair for my 7 and 4 yr olds. they love the goggles! They have held up well for the past 5 months, with the exception of the darts. the darts broke the first day. they seem to love the goggles even without the darts! I would recommend this toy for 6 and up, probably less likely to break/loose the darts

I received an email from Fisher Price with a list of new products they had out, and the moment my 3 year old son saw the Smart Cycle he was hooked! He kept begging for it while pointing at the computer monitor and so I just had to take a look to see what it was all about.

I came to Amazon to check out the specs and I was impressed. This is an "exercise bike" for children ages 3-6 that allows them to play learning games while exercising. Now my son isn't exactly the sedentary type and there are just times when it's too hot, cold, rainy to go outside to let some energy out. I figured the Smart Cycle would be perfect for him because it would allow him to get rid of some energy while he was learning numbers, shapes, letters, and words.

I ordered the Smart Cycle a couple of days ago, and now it's here with free 2-day shipping courtesy of Amazon Prime. You should have seen the look on my boy's face when he saw the box for the bike. His eyes lit up and he started yelling, "My bike! My bike!" Getting the bike together was easy enough and only took about 10 minutes. All you have to do is put some pieces together, plug it into the TV, insert the game cartridge and install 4 D batteries. My son's been playing with the bike for about 45 minutes now with no boredom in sight (this from a kid that loses interest REALLY quickly.)

My only real gripe with the bike is that you can't plug it into an outlet. I'm not sure how long the D batteries will last, but it would have been nice to have a permanent source of power.

If your kids love to run around, I would highly recommend this toy. It seems to keep them entertained for more than just 5 minutes, it's built well, it allows them to exercise, and it's educational. What more can you ask for on a hot, cold, or rainy day?

The name is somewhat misleading. What this is, actually, is a small, senitive black and white TV camera designed to slip into a telescope focuserin place of an eyepiece. Now this won't deliver images of faint, deep-sky objects- you need a cooled CCD and long exposures for that- but it will deliver excellent views of the moon and planets to a TV monitor, videorecorder of computer with video converter. Using videotape and a digitizer as a "poor man's active optics" it's possible to select frames and produce suprisingly good results.
At the asking price, it's a pretty good deal, too, and an inexpensive way to get started in digital astrophotograp

There was very little documentation, nothing saying anything about the focal length to give any idea of the actual magnification.Fun for bright objects, I've used it to get images of Jupiter and Saturn and some of the moon. I could only faintly see Jupiter's biggest moons when viewing on the TV screen (with the contrast set so Jupiter is washed out). When using my video capture card I couldn't get the moons to show up at any level of contrast, but still got some medeocre pics of Jupiter itself. There's not a very wide feild of view so it's very dificult to center something without tracking.I've noticed that I can use it as a poor-man's electronic microscope by attaching my 25mm Meade eyepiece to it and using my trypod to help steady and focus.A fun toy but I wouldn't expect to get any nebula or any other faint object with it.

I got this thing to share a keyboard and mouse (which are plugged into a USB hub) with 2 computers. I was tired of having 2 keyboards and 2 mice on my desk! I am using a Dell LCD monitor that has a built in USB ports and supports VGA and DVI simultaneously via a built in switch. I can now plug in all my USB peripherals (external hard drive, keyboard and mouse) into my monitor hub and at the touch of a switch can toggle between the 2 towers. It simply works, it takes a few seconds to kick in, but it works every time. No software installation necessary. Note: The package comes with 1 USB cable only - so if you are looking to use it the way I did you would need 2 additional USB cables.

I saw this little guy dancing to the music in a store, and the next thing you know, he had come home with me! idog is a real cutie. Though you could use him as an ipod mono speaker -- and yes, I consider the speaker pretty robust for such a diminutive pooch -- I think he shines the brightest as a palm-sized portable light show for your music. The LED light display on his face is something to see, with a variety of colors and animated patterns that adapt to the music you play, and from time to time idog will wag his head and raise or lower his ears in time to the beat. Throw in the doggy behavior -- he mopes if you leave him alone without music and growls when you turn him off -- and idog is a most amusing desktop companion. I am definitely looking forward to the idog bags, as it would be fun to bring him to a party, and the bags look like they would give his head the support he needs to travel without injury. I also saw a picture of the mini-mutt wearing one of his "chill sets" -- a hat, ear muffs, and sweater to ward off the cold weather -- and it was hilarious to be sure. I use rechargeable AAA batteries in idog and get hours of use on a charge. A great little pal for all the music lovers on your shopping list!

My 11 year old received this for his birthday. He had been saving money for an ipod and we bought this to go along with it. He can't get enough of this toy. It sits on his desk and sways its head when he is doing homework and it makes the cutest noises. Even my 5 year old will sit for hours and watch it. It's smaller than I thought it would be, but seems pretty durable and works really well. Quite a hit for that in between age!

I named my little I-dog Max. He might not match my black I-Pod (he's white) but he's cute as heck and great sound as well! I mainly got him so I can listen to my I-Pod at work. He's small enought to fit on my cluttered desk and has great sound. I couldn't take much more of the local "Lite" station anymore, so it's nice to be able to listen to my choice of songs. I love interacting with him and my co-workers really got a kick out of him. Also, he didn't put a hole in my pocket like a I-Pod dock would have and I can take him in the car and not get the dock for the it which runs about 99 dollars. I got him in the Toy's r Us in Times Square and they had a load of accesories for him, but they were much money in the store than online. I wanted a fish for my desk, but could not get one, now I have a puppy I don't have to clean up after, lol. Overall, It's handy, small, travels with you, has great sound, fun to interact with, not TOO expensive and just damn cute! Two thumbs up in my book!!

I bought this kit for my 5-year-old, but my 3-year-old wound up loving it every bit as much as the older one. The caterpillars arrive in a sealed container with everything they need--all you have to do is observe them. After a week, we placed the cocoons in the habitat, and out hatched five gorgeous butterflies. What's more, they began laying eggs within a few days, and before you know it, we had DOZENS of teeny-tiny baby caterpillars! Of course, we set them free outside (I'm no bug farmer), and we enjoyed painted lady butterflies throughout the rest of the summer. This kit provided my children with a wonderful, exciting learning experience that they will never forget!

Durability: Fun: Educational: I bought one of these last year for my nieces. I also got one for me, and I'm in my 30's. I waited until the spring time to send in my caterpillar certificate. They came in their own little container with just enough food. So you don't need to feed them anything. I tried to put some real food such as leaves from the plants they like to eat in the wild, but they preferred the food that came with them. I think I received 6 caterpillars and they all turned into butterflies. I let them go a day or two after they emerged. Kids are completely fascinated by the process from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. One word of caution, it may not be the best thing to get for Christmas since you may have to wait until spring to get your caterpillars. They will send them in the winter, but I didn't want the butterflies to die on me or freeze to death if I let them go.

My son received the butterfly garden as a birthday gift. We were going out of town, so asked to have the caterpillars delivered at a later date. They came on the exact date requested! The caterpillars were very small the first day, but grew so quickly that I wondered if we could actually watch them grow before our eyes (it certainly seemed that way)! It took only one week for the chrysalides to form, and only one more week for the butterflies to hatch. There is no feeding required for the caterpillars (they arrive in a container with their entire food supply)--all the kids need to do is watch them! My son and daughter both woke up each morning and would come running to tell me how big the caterpillars were. Then they watched them form into chrysalides, and still watched them each day until they hatched. The day we released the butterflies, my son looked at me and said "I sure am going to miss my beautiful butterflies!...Mom, can we get some more?"

i got this for my five year old son for Christmas. He has a space-themed room and this fit in perfectly. He loves it and has it on every night. What's really great about it is that it will turn off automatically. What's not so great about it is that it just burns up the batteries! We've already had to replace the batteries three times since Christmas (and the latest batteries I put in where Energizer Lithium e2; they lasted about 3 1/2 weeks). The battery issue is the only reason I gave this product four stars instead of five.

was a Christmas gift for my 8 year old daughter who is into absolutely nothing but animals. She absolutely loves it. She turns it on every night and her and our other children go and watch it. I even watch it. It has two settings. 1. Is where it goes through the phases of the moon. I was mistaken about how this works, I thought that it went through the phases along with the moon, however, it blinks through them pretty quick. 2. The moon is just set on a single phase of the moon. I have seen them go through both of the settings, there is a small remote control that the child can set themselves. The only problem with the remote is that because of its size it can get easily misplaced, especially if your kids are like mine and would lose just about anything. My suggestion for this would be to put some velcro on the back of the remote and stick it somewhere. Also it has a sensor and turns off when the sun comes up and back on when the sun goes out. It also runs off batteries. Ours came with a cd, which I thought would be something that they could watch on the computer, but it isn't it is just talking about the moon. Overall it was a good purchase, and I would definitely recommend it for a child who is very hard to shop for.

This keyboard is amazing. I bought it for my daughter and it can do all kinds of things. I agree the packaging to open is tough but what product is not these days. It is so fun kids can pretend they are in a orchestra or even add melodies and instruments to songs through the MP3 player feature. Sure it does not teach anyone how to use a keyboard but it never advertised that it can. Each tube does something different when you wave your hand in front of it (drums, change melodies,etc. Way more fun than an average keyboard and can also double as a mp3 speaker.

This is the only thing my daughter really keyed in on for Christmas 06. She never wavered, so I ordered it as her big gift from Santa. My husband thought it would be a bust and she wouldn't play with it. She has not stopped playing with it, making her own beats, "writing" her own songs with beats and lyrics. She took it to school today to show for "favorite gift" show and tell. She is six, soon to be 7. She immediately said, "maybe she could get the keyboard for next Christmas" and when I reminded her that her birtday was coming much sooner and maybe she could get it then, she was thrilled. We bought this for our ant-obsessed son, and the whole family and all visitors have loved watching the ants work. A couple of notes: The life-span of the ants is about 3 months -- it's been exactly 3 months and we have about 4 living ants left. The ants bite - at a science store where we bought the habitat, they had one on display. The cashier was trying to show me how you would clean out any dead ants, and when he lifted the lid, the ants swarmed out and a few bit him. I taped the lid shut to deter any kids from trying to open it. If you refrigerate the habitat for 15 minutes, that will make the ants sluggish, and you can clean out any dead ants or excess gel that the ants bring to the surface. However, set a timer! Once I left the poor ants in the refrigerator for 2 hours and when I retrieved them they were all huddled at the bottom of the habitat. Fortunately, they all survived (although perhaps you should take the 3 month life-span with a grain of salt, given the extreme conditions they faced early in their habitat life). Due to health and mortality concerns, my son would not allow me to put a drop of nail polish on the back of one ant so that we could name him and chart his/her progress. I think that would have made the habitat even more interesting, to be able to track one specific ant. Also, the clerk at the science store said the gel is reusable, that is, when the old ants all die, I can add more ants. That would also be interesting - would they close off the old tunnels and build new ones? Would they use the ones that exist? Too bad I've misplaced the order form... All in all, a very worthwhile $20.

With Antworks you can see right through the gel for optimal observation. Here are some helpful tips to make your ant watching experience the best possible! Order your ants from Life Studies as suggested in other posts. However, go to http://www.infowest.com/life/ants.htm and order them online. I ordered them online and received them in 6 days! If you use the form that comes with Antworks, it will take longer, and there is nothing worse than staring at your Antworks with no ants! The directions tell you to poke 4 holes in the gel with the included stick. Poke the holes in the gel next to the glass. This will assure that the ants will stay next to the glass when tunneling. With the tunnels next to the glass, you can see much better detail! The directions tell you to open the top for a few seconds each week to allow new Oxygen inside. BE CAREFULL - the ants will swarm to the opening, so do it when no ants are near the top. The ants are huge!! THEY WILL BITE!! Once you get your vile of ants, make sure they are on the bottom of the vile. Open the Antworks, open the vile, and tap them hard to drop them inside. If one falls outside of the Antworks, dont try to pick it up. It is probably best to just squash it! Sit back and watch you ants build their world!

My son gave me this ant farm for Christmas this year. I ordered the ants the next day and then started waiting. The unused ant farm sat in my office and my coworkers all wanted to know what it was. Their first comment was "it didn't come with the ants?" The answer is "of course not, they would be dead by the time someone bought it." You have to order your ants and it can take a long time for them to come in, especially in the winter. It took several weeks for the ants to arrive. They come in a small brown pouch containing one vial of ants and are delivered via the post office. I carefully read the instructions as the ants had large mandibles and didn't look too happy about being in such a small space. Into the refrigerator they went for just a few minutes and they I easily popped them into the habitat. It's been almost two months now and they have created a lot of tunnels and most are still alive. The gel in which they live is also their food. This is a nice feature since I don't like lifting the lid any more than I have to. These little guys want out. In case you are wondering, you DO NOT get a queen so the ants will live their life expectancy and then die. You don't get baby ants without a queen. The kit comes with instructions for collecting ants yourself, but I live in Texas where the only ants are fire ants. The instruction book tells you to NOT collect fire ants, nor army ants. The book that comes with the habitat has some basic ant info and was a fun read. If you are going to give this as a gift to a child, order the ants in advance because it could take a month to 6 weeks for your ants to arrive.

The Ant Farm was much smaller than we expected, but the blue lights make it interesting. The ants were very active the first couple days, building 2 different tunnels, but are now not so active. They are still fun to watch since some of them crawl through the tunnels, but most of them huddle at the bottom of the farm. Follow the directions and order Harvester Ants from any link off where you purchase the farm. They are big ants and are neat to watch. The best part - no feeding or clean-up! Overall, well worth the money, especially when you see people's reactions to it.

Durability: Fun: Educational: My son got this for his birthday, we had just encountered the fires in Sourthern Ca and he wasn't able to run outside for a week, well this game took care of it inside a house. It was great!!! I tried it and laughed so hard and was so out of breath!!! I love this game! Very simple at level 1 and too much thinking for me at level 4. Great for kids of all ages.

Durability: Fun: Educational: I didn't know that this product won so many awards before I purchased it for my kids. I took it out on a rainy day and they have been playing with it for 2 hours straight! They are running around like crazy, cheering each other on, and loving the different games and levels. You can play alone or as teams. You can do colors, math (on higher levels), reverse hits, etc. This is awesome! For under $20 it's well worth it. And, they are getting out so much energy and exercising so much. It's fun for adults too! I haven't had it for more than one day, so I am not sure about durability, but I would think it is durable b/c it has won different awards. Definitely buy this toy!

We played this game with my 8 year old nephew this past weekend, and I must say, I was quite impressed! Hyper Dash is actually several different games in one, with a nice mix of physical versus mental challenges. Using the bell-shaped main tagger and the small plastic targets, players are challenged to do things such as tag the identified colors as quickly as possible, remember and repeat a series of colors, and more. Each game has several different levels, making the game appropriate for school-aged children to adults--perfect for parents playing along with kids! Plus, the tagger and targets are small and lightweight, making this game portable and thus great for travel. Highly recommended for kids and families!

Durability: Fun: Educational: My six year old received the spy goggles for Christmas and loves them. Not only does he feel like a "real spy," his goggles now double as a reading light at night. They are easy on, easy off and very durable - he has a raucous four year old brother! People often do a double take when we're in public since he hardly takes them off. I originally bought this game for my classroom to help my students develop thinking skills. When it first arrived, I took the game home to figure out how to play it before introducing it to my students--and I was hooked! My own children are ages 10 and 11 and they love the game (we are buying a game for home), but I teach students up to age 18 and they enjoy the game just as much. Educationally, it helps younger students develop a better understanding of spatial relations and planning ahead. For older students (and adults) it helps to develop various strategy skills. Unlike most educational games, the rules are simple and once you've played it through one time (or watched it through one time) all your effort can go into plotting your moves. The game doesn't run out of possibilities, either; every game is different, even if you play with the same people over and over.

A friend, who knows we love games in our family, bought us this. Well, within a day we all were hooked. my 5 year old and 12 year old can play with my husband and me and we all are challenged and have a blast! i bought a set to bring to our family vacation home, and my sister in law and i were up until midnight every nite for a week playing this game with whomever we could snag to play it with us!! even really little kids have fun just playing with the pieces, not actually playing the game. the only caveat I have is DON'T LOSE ANY PIECES!!!!! all of the pieces are critical to the game.. that is a real challenge in our household!!

I only bought this game because it was recommended to me time and time again. It looked boring and simplistic, but I figured there must be something I wasn't seeing. And there was! It is a great game! All of my kids can play it and challenge each other and me. This game does not necessarily favor the oldest(and supposedly wisest?) player. My seven year-old can beat the pants of me. It also gets the brain working in non-traditional ways. You have to look at the grid in unique ways. The pieces aren't lined up in rows and columns like most games. You connect pieces by the corners. So sometimes you can connect a piece in an area that looks like it is totally bocked by your opponent. And of course there is the strategy... I still haven't decided which is the best piece to start off with. The game also takes a nice length of time, not too long and not too short.

This little toy is great, the kids (8 and up) love playing with it. Within 5 minutes of opening the toy they were able to play with it. Very simple rules allows them to jump right in. The toy looks well made and has a convenient space to store the discs when not in use. Its also a fun game for an adult to play with their kids. You can make the game as challenging or as easy as you want by varying the distance from which the discs are thrown. Great toy!!

What a wonderful gift! This was a gift from Santa and wow do those elves work some magic! Our daughter wanted a microscope but friends recommended this to us. Thank goodness they did. It magnifies taste buds on your tongue, things you really don't want to see in your carpet, skin cells,fibers...our family has already spent hours playing, exploring, and learning together. It will accompany us New Year's Eve to friends house for the shir entertainment. As an elementary school teacher, I cannot wait to share this with my second graders and mh students! Not easy to use They make it look so easy to use this on TV. You have to get this thing in the perfect position before you can see anything. My 32 year old husband has a hard time making it work let alone my 7 year olds!

This is fun... It's been a few days since we opened this on Christmas. My kids had lots of fun finding things to look at on Christmas morning. Since then, they have only played with it a few times. This may be something that just gets played with occasionally, but that's okay. Amazon's price was $10 cheaper than Wal-Mart! We had no problem focusing the Eyeclops like some of the other reviewers. The Advanced Mission takes this familiar game to a whole new level. Here is the list of the new weapons and tactics now at your disposal: 2 exocet missles fired from your aircraft carrier; 1 tomahawk missle with a massive footprint fired from your battleship; 2 apache missles fired from your destroyer; 2 torpedoes fired from your sub; two recon airplanes for surveillance; and sonar imaging from your sub! While the older version of this game had some strategy, it was still a mostly guessing game, but with the Advanced Mission you really have to plan your attack and keep track of your available assets. One hint: have your recon planes take off from the aircraft carrier ASAP to avoid them being destroyed if the ship gets sunk. If you play this game with some strategy in mind you will find yourself doing very little guessing, which makes this game much more interesting and NEVER boring!

Durability: Fun: Educational: I bought this for my 8 year old. Although it took an adult to read, understand and then teach the rules of play, once we got the basic (classic) game figured out, it was easy. There is an advance game too, but it is too complicated for us. We enjoyed it a lot, and it makes you plan and do some thinking, as to where to put your ships. My son always wants MORE MORE MORE when it comes to Battleship. The game talks, and it closes up with a carrying handle. That makes it more money than the other versions, but it is well-made and worth the price.

Durability: Fun: Educational: A great classic that's been updated with a lot more little tricks and rules to make the game seem more exciting. There are several different versions to this classic which add on more technical details to an already cool game. However, more often than not you find yourself leaning in to hear what the computer is saying or trying to figure out how to enter in the right codes to load your settings into the game so it registers where your ships are. The one thing I really did enjoy about the new rules were the planes you could use to do recon form your aircraft carrier. Overall, a decent buy.

I got this webkin becasue my friend told me about the new ones, and I saw the reindeerhad just come out. This one is my favorite, and it is soooooo soft! I got my new roomba today, and I can't say enough about how great it is. We had about 2 weeks of fur from our 2 golden retrievers built up on the carpet (yes - I really do hate to vacuum). I let the roomba go, and it sucked it up with no problem at all. In only about 15 minutes, it had done an AMAZING job. The dust bin really does hold quite a bit. The only issue I find is that, because our dogs have long fur, I need to clean the brush off each time. That is just as easy as cleaning a hair brush. The dogs love it, too. My oldest one is terrified of the regular vacuum and usually hides in the bathtub. With the roomba, she just follows it around. I can even put a tennis ball on the top and my two dogs will follow it around while it's going. I was concerned our mess would be too much for it, but I was wrong. I highly recommend the roomba for anyone.

Roombas have now evolved into surprisingly well-designed machines that provide a surprising amount of vacuuming for the purchase price. Which Roomba: - All current models have the same innards and cleaning abilities, making bottom-of-the-line Red a bargain. Even Red's missing 'Max' mode (allows continuous cleaning beyond one hour) can be used if you buy the optional remote. - Color and case design change a bit from model to model, and higher-end models come with more accessories in the box. Cool features described in the higher models can be added later. - The main benefit of the drive-up charging base, included starting with the mid-line Discovery, isn't actually the automatic charging. With the base in a room, you know where to find the vac when it's done. Without it, Roomba finishes wherever it pleases -- whether or not that's a convenient place for you to retrieve it. - Because you empty dirt before or after use, the optional, top-of-the-line scheduling capability doesn't really add completely unattended cleaning capability. Before you buy: - You can't see one of the vac's best features in the product picture. A front-side brush sticks out the front-right side of the vac, so it gets as close into corners as upright vacs. With this brush and a wall-distance sensor, it hugs the baseboards and puts most vac's "edge cleaning" claims to shame. - Design changes to recently built units fix problems reviewers report on units made before mid-2005. Check the serial number on the box when you get yours. Build dates June 2005 or later have the fixes. The build date is after the model number (JEN4xxx); six digit date should be greater than '050601', ignore the rest of the serial number after this. - Roomba works quite differently than other vacs. Brushes pick up hair and larger dirt; the vac gets the dust that the brushes don't get. It doesn't replace a standard vacuum -- it cuts down how often you need to use it. - On hard floors, the brush seems to give Roomba better results than standard suction-only vacs. On dense-plush or low carpet, it does well; but the big vac will need to come out for periodic deep cleaning. - 3 1/2" tall and about 13" diameter, it easily gets under furniture and between chair legs. Front bumper clearance (a bit over 1/2" -- about 9/16" or 15mm) determines which rugs and doormats it climbs onto and which it sees as obstacles. - It's not terribly loud, and not shrill, but the noise is busy enough that you'll likely want to be away or in another room unless you're also doing housework. Getting used to it: - Bumping into things first seems a rather crude way for it to find its way around, but it doesn't seem to leave marks, and it's vacuuming right up to things anyway. It takes longer to vacuum than you do, and its often random patterns seem inefficient. Let it be -- it does remarkably well at covering everything this way. - Expect Roomba to work room-by-room, not to do the whole house unattended. In normal operation, it runs up to an hour for mid-to-large rooms then stops. At least on mostly-hard floors, it can fully clean two of these rooms on a charge. - If a regular vacuum would choke on something, so will this. The time you normally spend picking things up as you go needs to happen before starting Roomba instead. (At least your hands won't be full with a vacuum as you pick up . . . ) - You do need to empty its dustbin and check its underside after each run -- after all, it's about the size of a couple of Dustbusters, and those don't run unattended over an entire room. Remove and empty the dirt/dustbin, turn the vac upside down on the counter, check the main brush and clear as needed. Yes, you'll be doing this more often than on a full-size vac, but then, you don't have to tend it the entire time it's vacuuming. - The 'virtual walls' transmit a remote-control like infrared beam that's wider than you'd expect. If Roomba unexpectedly starts to act like it's just run into an invisible force field, that just may be what happened. Reposition, turn off, or turn down the 'virtual wall'. Getting the most out of it: - If you want vacuuming to be as automatic as possible, some 'trim' projects may be in order. Clip up hanging cords, and get out the double-stick carpet tape where needed. Consider neutering carpet tassels -- tape 'em underneath. - Although Roomba can navigate mazes of table legs and other objects, consider small changes in furniture placement that can make big differences in how quickly Roomba gets the job done. Forests of openings that are just a bit wider than Roomba eat time --move some things together so openings are narrower than Roomba; others further apart to speed passage. - Though it's natural to think first of using Roomba in main rooms, small rooms bring gains too. Drop the vac off in bathrooms, stair landings, and other small areas as you do other housework. - All rechargeable appliance batteries lose power eventually. Roomba's is easily replaceable, and if a $50 battery lasts you a year of vacuuming -- that's actually quite a good deal in the world of rechargeable batteries. Tip: newer Roombas have a somewhat hidden, built-in 16-hour battery "reconditioning" cycle useful when runtimes drop after some months. To trigger this cycle, take the battery out, press/hold 'power' for at least 30 seconds, wait 10 minutes or so, then put battery back in & start charger. The need for this isn't indicative of a Roomba shortcoming -- other rechargeable appliances should support battery conditioning & replacement instead of forcing you to throw 'em away.

Addictive--with a little practice and the right amount of space, June 12, 2007

I bought this because it's the first RC flying toy I've seen with actual flapping wings. I'm an adult and I bought it for myself because I work in a room that's a converted warehouse and we have really high ceilings and not many walls. It's really enjoyable to fly because you've never seen anything like it. It really does resemble a giant flying bug and it's movements are kind of creepy and it makes a soft buzzing sound. The key is to make sure a) the controller antenna is fully extended, and b) the rotor is still and while you start the wings flapping you hold it and release it into the air. With more practice, you'll get better. Don't be frustrated if it crashes--the fun is seeing how long you can keep it going. Even if you can only get it to fly around the room once, it's worth it. It comes with extra wings (different pattern and color printed on them), and an extra rotor. Be sure to unpack it all from the box carefully because some of the small parts are tucked away inside. It takes 6 AA batteries that go in the controller, which charges the bug via a small cable. The battery life seems pretty good so far. (I've had it for a couple weeks and have yet to change the batteries...but then, I only fly it here for fun and not more than about 10 minutes a day.) I've had it run into walls and poles from the height of 10' or so and it seems pretty durable (because it's so light). Fun. Somewhat educational too because it demonstrates a unique method of flight.

I bought the bee version on a whim. I had no interest in RC planes etc. I now have a CX2 helicopter and a $70 heli based on the fun this toy provided. You will not find a more reliable low maintenace rc flyer then this. The flip side is that it takes a lot of practice to get to where you can fly and gain altitude. If you have kids, then this is something that you can do with them. My two year old loves to watch it fly and fetches when there is a crash. As I mentioned, my two year old fetches for me when I crash, he crushes the tail, abuses the wings, has fallen on it and it still flys great. I have had some spectular crashes and it has always recovered. This is more fun then my more expensive flyers just becuase is always ready to go and is a challange to fly. Also, it does not seem to cause the same degree of damage to objects that my helicopters do. When there is no wind this is a blast to fly outside. Once you have mastered the toy, very slight wind can be used to gain high altitude if you wish but you might find yourself stuck in a tree. Tips: turn with sticato bursts to maintain altitude. Use very gentile turning inputs (takes practice). Practice throwing so that the bug flies straight out of your hand. If you can not seem to hold altitude, you might need to replace the batteries in the charger, but more likely, you need to practice turning gently and maximizing the diameter of your space. If you space is small, practice throwing it and then fly it back to you and catch.

I purchased the DragonFly for my grandson who is 9 years old. It was an immediate hit and even prompted him to write a thank you letter! (a first). The remote controlled DragonFly is very easy to operate. After only a few tries we were flying high! The aircraft part is sturdy and survived several collisions with furniture and walls before we were all pushed out of the house by an irate Mom. The structure of the DragonFly is based on the early experience of Igor Sikorsky, who saw the insect version as a child and tried to design his first helicopters based on the flapping wing concept. (Eventually the current horizontal 4 bladed rotating wing proved more mechanically durable and and was universally adopted.) This great aviation history lesson can be added to the product, and it really helped open up communication between this Grandpa and a very active 9 year old. Great product and a good value. I bought it through an Amazon affiliate and it was delivered on time and as advertised.

Settlers of Catan is a very unique game. It is very easy to learn but hard to master the subtleties of the game. It has several things that make this game unique. The main thing that makes this game unique is that the board can be different each time you play the game. The five land types that each produce a different resource are shuffled each time you play the game. So the board ends up being different each time the game is played. Another variable is the numbers that you lay down on the land types. The numbers are also shuffled each time. When you roll the dice, what ever number comes up, the land or lands with that number on it produce their resource - regardless of who's turn it is. So you opponents can actually help you on their turn. A third variable is ports. If you have a settlement on a port you can trade two of one type of resource you have for one you need with the bank. Normally you have to trade four of one resource, to get the one resource you want if none of the other players are willing to make a trade with you. The fourth variable is the thief. Anytime someone rolls a seven on the dice, they get to move the thief off off the property that he is on, and move it to any other piece of property and to take away one card at random from the hand of any players that have a settlement on that property. The thief automaticly steals what ever is produced on that piece of land for as long as he is there. This denies your opponents precious resources that they need to build roads,settlements, cities, and buy development cards. Development cards are soldier cards that you can buy to chase off the thief off your property and on to one of your opponents properties. Another type of development card is a victory point card that gives you one point toward the ten point total that you need to win. Settlers of Catan is designed for 3 to 4 players but you can have up to 8 players with the expansion pack.

If you are the one who grew up playing with an erector set, i suggest you to look at this new model because they're still just as cool as they were when you had one.

But the materials have actually been improved.

The straight peices are now completely flat, rather than the beveled sides they used to ship in the old sets. They're made of a more rigid metal as well. This allows for a little more flexability in what your kids can design and build.

At first I thought the price was a little steep, but my 8 year old has easily gotten $100 worth of enjoyment out of this set. I actually ended up buying another set to ship to a relative for his upcoming birthday, so yes, you're getting what you pay for.

I grew up playing with the Erector sets of the 60s and 70s. As the other reviewer said, these new sets are an improvement. The models each take a few evenings to build (the pictured crane took my 7 year old and I three evenings to complete), but that is the beauty of the toy. It takes a while and it is a bit difficult to build the really cool stuff. What other toy teaches that lesson today?
